5 Simple Ways to Create a Healthier Workday

Create-a-Healthier-Workday-Future-Proof-MovementSitting for eight hours a day, five days a week takes its toll on your health and well-being. Fortunately, building healthier habits into your workday doesn’t have to be complicated.

Here are five simple ways to create a healthier workday:

1. Stand Up

There is a reason why standing desks are so popular right now. Standing is better than sitting. Staying glued to a chair all day is not doing your body or your mind any favors. Take short breaks and stand up and walk around. Even if you have a standing desk, make sure that you’re still moving throughout the day.

2. Work Out During Lunch

If it’s tough to wake up early for a morning workout or sneak in some training after a full day of work, then your lunch hour is a great option. Yes, it does take a little bit of extra planning and remembering your gym bag with all your gear. But once you do a few lunch hour workouts, you’ll settle into a routine and look forward to that time in the middle of the day.

3. Drink Water

Drinking coffee is not the same as drinking water. Your body needs water to continue functioning well. So make sure that you’re getting plenty throughout the day. Bring a water bottle and keep it on your desk. If you find that you forget to drink water, then set a timer on your phone to remind you. If you’re getting out of your chair more often to refill your bottle (or use the bathroom), this will also help keep you moving around throughout the day.

4. Walk During Meetings

If you don’t need a computer or bulky technology for your meetings, then turn them into opportunities to move. Some people think better when they’re moving. Others are more comfortable sharing their ideas and opinions when they’re not sitting face-to-face with someone. If walking meetings aren’t possible, then find a co-worker or two to take a short walk break with during the day.

5. Relax Your Shoulders

Several times throughout the day, you unknowingly tense your neck and shoulders. Sometimes the tension can be so much that it’s almost like your shoulders are in your ears. Be aware of your posture throughout the day, especially in your neck. If you’re tensing this area, take a deep breath and relax. Let your shoulders droop and sit up straight (or stand) with a tight core.
