What is Functional Fitness?

We all know that exercise and physical activity is good for our health. Physical activity has the power to improve not just our physical health, but also our emotional, social, and mental health as well. Improving our fitness, and more specifically our functional fitness can even enhance your everyday life.

Functional fitness is a term that has grown in popularity over the past several years and has changed how people tend to exercise. Traditional pieces of fitness equipment have been replaced by exercises that require something as simple as your bodyweight.

According to the Mayo Clinic:

“Functional fitness exercises train your muscles to work together and prepare them for daily tasks by simulating common movements you might do at home, at work, or in sports.”

Think about some of the things you do daily.

  • Can you comfortably go for a walk or a jog with your dog?
  • How does it feel carrying groceries from your car to your 3rd-floor apartment building with no elevator?
  • Or can you lift a heavy suitcase off the baggage claim carousel without feeling an odd twinge in your back?

Functional fitness training addresses each of these everyday activities, plus so much more. The goal of functional fitness is to train using multiple muscle groups all at the same time. And, to choose exercises that mimic the movements you perform throughout the day.

Rather than starting with a specific piece of equipment, functional training begins with a particular body movement, like pushing, pulling, rotating, squatting, and pressing. And while you want to be strong while performing these types of body movement, functional fitness training also addresses your range of motion, balance, coordination, agility, and power, as well.

If you’re new to functional fitness training, it may surprise you how a movement that seems so simple is quite difficult when performed correctly and with purpose. Rather than going to the gym and just going through the motions, functional fitness training can get your fitness back on track and lead to improvements that will spill over into your everyday life.

Future Proof Movement offers both group and personal training programs where you can improve your functional fitness safely and confidently. If you’re interested in learning more about either of these services, please contact us today.
