An Introduction to Biofeedback Training

At Future Proof Movement, we strive to help you find the balance you need to succeed. Our integrated services are designed to work together to help you find balance, strengthen the connection between your mind and body, and ultimately improve your health. And, one of the integrated services we offer is biofeedback training. If you’re not familiar with this service, here is an introduction to biofeedback training.

What is Biofeedback Training?

Biofeedback is a technique you can use to learn to control some of your body’s functions, such as your heart rate. (source) Functions such as heart rate, breathing rate, and blood pressure are part of your autonomic nervous system. This means that your body automatically regulates these functions.

When your body experiences stress, your body responds automatically by increasing your heart rate, breathing rate, and blood pressure. However, with the proper training and guidance, research has shown that you can learn to control your body’s physiological responses to stress. By relaxing your mind and body, you are able to cope and manage the symptoms of stress. (source)

Biofeedback training can help you to reduce the stress response. As a result, this non-invasive method can lower your risk for heart disease, without medications.

Training, Not Treatment

Biofeedback training is not the same type of treatment as going in for a relaxing massage. There is a little bit of work, training if you will, that has to be done on your part.

In a typical session, small sensors are placed on your body (usually your fingertips). These sensors are linked up to a monitor that can provide immediate feedback to changes in heart rate, muscle tension, blood pressure, sweat rate, and breathing rate. When you’re under stress, these functions change.

In a biofeedback session, you are guided through how to create a voluntary stress reduction through relaxation techniques (such as deep breathing), and you are able to see instant feedback on the screen. With practice, you can learn how to create this positive response on your own.
