4 Tips to Ensure You Get A Proper Cool Down

Proper-Cool-Down-Tips-Future-Proof-MovementAnytime you work out, step one is going through a proper warm-up. And once you’ve finished a great workout, it’s easy to be tempted to move on to the next part of your day. But rather than jumping in your car right after your last rep, take some time to cool down.

The final step of any workout should be a cool down. Taking time to cool down after your workout properly is an essential part of your recovery. So here are a few tips to ensure that you get a proper cool down:

1. Take five to ten minutes.

A little bit of a cool down is better than no cool down. However, taking a full five to ten minutes gives your body a chance to return to its resting state. Your breathing and heart rate will slow down, and your body temperature will begin to drop back to normal, as well.

2. Don’t lie down; keep moving.

If you just finished a tough workout, you might think laying down on the floor to catch your breath sounds like a great idea. Don’t do it! You might be dizzy or lightheaded. Stay upright and walk slowly around the room. Raise your arms above your head to help you catch your breath, and do your best to keep moving. Your heart rate will continue to drop, and your breathing will return to normal.

3. Take some time to stretch.

The increase in body temperature and blood flow to your muscles makes post-workout time a great time to stretch. Incorporate a few different stretches into your cool down to increase your flexibility and range of motion.

4. Stay focused.

Even though your workout’s over, it doesn’t mean it’s time to flip your attention back to your to-do list. Keep paying attention to how your body is feeling and focus on bringing your heart rate down. Take lots of deep breaths, especially while holding a stretch.
